Congratulations, 9 out 10 homes in America does not have enough insualtoin in there attic and you have recognized it. Insualting your attic is the one of the best home improvemtents money can buy. It always pays you back. Not to mention the federal governtment wants to pay for 30% of it for you. There are some things to consider when purchasing attic insualtion. Many contractors do not air seal, this can cause major problems with the life of your roof. Your home produces moisture which typically travels through air leaks, not a problem right now. Now lets say you take R value from an 11 to R49. Great you have slowed the flow of heat thru your living space but the moisture still escapes thru air leakage. Well proir to adding attic insualtion that was not a problem because you were essentially heating your roof with all the lost heat. Not any more, the additional attic insualtion you added has stopped the transfer of heat so your roof is much colder. Cold enough to create condensation which leads to rot, decay, and molding of your roof. This is just one example, every house is different and the problems can be more or less severe. Just blow some insualtion in your eaves to find out.
Insualting the attic properly with air sealing can lead up to a 50% lower heating and cooling cost. No we aren't a window company totally fudging the numbers either. Most people see a return on there investment within 1-2 years at current energy prices. Improving the energy efficiency can be accomplished a number of ways, adding and/or replacing insulation throughout your home where necessary is one way. Places where heat is lost the most is generally through the attic and or basement (see Basement Insulation), due to an inadequate amount of insulation. Before adding insulation to your attic it is important to make sure all leaks are sealed (see Air Sealing). By doing this, if moisture is present in the attic it can worsen by creating mildew and mold to spread. Attic Insulation Types/Options Available There are many different types of insulation to choose from and determing which best fits the needs of the home can be discussed with an Energy Advisor.
